Ways to Manage Stress from Entrepreneurship

The life of an entrepreneur can be very exciting and rewarding. When you become a success in the business world, you are able to enjoy a lifestyle that most can’t because you have put in the work and taken the risks that most aren’t willing to.

While the benefits, luxuries, and sense of fulfillment and accomplishment that come with making a success out of yourself and your business are absolutely worth it, the stress of the journey is unavoidable. The definition of entrepreneurship is the process of designing and building a brand or business, which typically involves a considerable amount of risk. Taking on an endeavor like this is stressful straight out of the gate. When you consider all of the bumps in the road that you will inevitably encounter along the way, the amount of stress that entrepreneurs face can be pretty overwhelming.

In order to make sure that all of the stress of running the show doesn’t negatively impact you, your business or your team, you will want to be proactive about managing it. You will want to have a plan in place for dealing with that stress as it comes so it doesn’t build up on you. If you allow it to keep piling up, it will begin to impact your performance and slowly destroy all that you’ve worked for.

Here are some great ways to take care of yourself- mind, body and soul:

  • Eat well. What does eating have to do with stress?  If you’re not giving your body adequate nutrition, it’s not going to function properly. When we’re stressed, the first thing we want to reach for is usually junk food because it just makes us feel better in the moment. But we all know that doesn’t last. Take care of your body and give it the fuel it needs so you’ll have the energy to accomplish all that you need to.
  • Exercise. Working out is probably the best stress buster. Physically working through your stress makes you feel like a brand new person. In addition, exercise gives you the added energy and confidence to kick ass every day at the office!
  • Meditate. Meditation works in many ways to relieve stress. By controlling your breathing and clearing your mind, you can reduce stress and anxiety, elevate your mood, lower blood pressure and slow your heart rate. Not only is meditation great for relieving stress in the moment, but routine practice will decrease anxiety and stress over time and will allow you to think more clearly, stay focused with distractions and perform under stress.
  • Take breaks. Entrepreneurs have a reputation for burning themselves out. A strong work ethic is definitely something to be valued and is a necessity in this industry. However, you must know when to take a break or you will burn out and you won’t be of any use to anybody. Taking a break allows you to recharge, regroup and come back to work with a fresh perspective and a new energy.
  • Make time for friends and family. Entrepreneurs also have a reputation for getting wrapped up in their work. Devotion to your craft is a wonderful and admirable thing, but you must also make time for life outside of work. Spending time with friends and family can have an incredible affect on our moods. A night out with loved ones can really melt your stress away.
  • Make time for hobbies. Running a business takes so much time and dedication that we can allow our other passions to fall by the wayside. Don’t forget about the things that your love to do. Whether it be cooking, spending time outdoors, sports, or playing music- make sure that you spend time doing what you love.
  • Make time to do nothing. It’s okay to set aside some time to just veg out. We all need some time here and there to just hang out and watch a movie or catch up on sleep. In this industry, we all feel like we need to be on the go at all times and we feel guilty when we’re not being productive. Well, we all need a little “me” time, too!
  • Disconnect. As much as we all love our smartphones and being connected at all times, it can be so freeing to disconnect time to time. This can be tough when you manage a business, but you can set limits. Set certain times when you are only to be contacted for emergencies and kick back and relax for those glorious few hours. You don’t have to feel obligated to answer every email or phone call after hours all the time.

They say, “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so you can live the rest of your life like most people can’t.” All of the hard work and stress will definitely pay off and by being proactive about managing the stressors that pop up along the way, you can make the journey much more enjoyable!
